Terry Burrows, WCM’s home grown fastest window cleaner on the planet and Guinness Book Record Breaker is back!
Terry appeared on a host of TV programmes after smashing the world record in 1995 by cleaning three 45-inch square windows – including wiping the window sill – in the world’s fastest time and improving it on numerous occasions afterwards so the record now stands at 9.14 seconds according to the 2012 Guinness Book Of Records after Terry smashed his own record again in Blackpool in 2009.
Terry writes for the Window Cleaning Magazine and is back in his column next issue after a short break. So, what has Terry been doing with his time off from the magazine?
Taking it easy? Watching day time telly? No, as well as his window cleaning work and carpet cleaning work, Terry has been cleaning out the bookies!!
THE WORLD’S fastest window washer has taken a second leading bookmaker to the cleaners after a £1 each way bet landed him more than a year’s wages.
Terry placed a £1 each way Lucky 15 bet covering four horses to win £39,998 – including a ten per cent bonus from bookmakers BetFred.
And dozens of fellow punters from his local Wetherspoons – the Moon And Stars in Romford, Essex, – followed Turbo into the bookies to back his last winner a horse called appropriately enough Domination.
They all followed Turbo as they knew he had form for winning. For in January 2010 Terry picked up £41,439 from William Hill after placing another £1 each way Lucky 15 on runners over the jumps.
Terry, said: ‘It’s a case of lightning striking twice, but this time all my winners were on the flat.
‘I can believe it’s happened again as I wrote on the bottom of m betting slip ‘can I have cash please?’ with a smiley face.
‘It’s not an everyday occurrence, but I do study the racing on TV and watch for horses that have been unlucky.
‘It was great when everyone piled in from the pub to back Domination – the atmosphere in Betfred was amazing when it won.’
His four winners were all on televised Channel 4 races from Ayr, Newbury and Newmarket and were Mass Rally at 16-1, Captain Ramius at 16-1, Hajras at 11-1 and Domination at 13-2.
Terry, who like most small businessmen has been hit by the recession, added: ‘I am already described as the Usain Bolt of window cleaning by Vodafone on Youtube, but I’m hoping to clean up at the bookmakers even more in the future.
‘This win couldn’t have come at a better time – in a recession people always cut back on things like cleaning the windows and they also make savings on carpet cleaning another branch of my business.’
His website www.fastestwindowcleaner.co.uk reveals that Terry enjoys performing a cover version of George Formby’s classic ‘When I’m Cleaning Windows and states: ‘Terry always presents the window cleaning competition at the annual conference of his trade association – The National Federation of Master Window and General Cleaners as well as a major cleaning industry exhibition at the N.E.C. in Birmingham.’
And unlike other world records Terry always tells audiences who watch his speed window cleaning – ‘do try this at home so you discover just how tough it is to do it.’
His wife Patricia, 51, and their children Alicia, 22, and Ashley, 20, are looking forward to Terry’s plan to splash out on a foreign holiday with his winnings.
Terry, who beat Jamaican world record breaking sprinter Usain Bolt to the Twitter handle #fastestonearth, said: ‘The Scoop6 is set to hit a £1 million this weekend, so I might well be popping back to Betfreds for another £2 flutter.
‘I’ve cleaned up at William Hill and Betfred in Romford – Paddy Power and Ladbrokes had better watch out for me now.’
Betfred boss Fred Done said: ‘I’ve been taken to the cleaners before – but Terry is clearly the world’s luckiest window cleaner as well as the fastest.
‘Now he’s quickly turning into the Usain Bolt of betting as well as window cleaning.’
‘I certainly don’t want to see him back in the Guinness Book of Records for cleaning up in Betfred shops.’
